Today’s Tree Care Visit

*PLEASE KEEP PEOPLE AND PETS AWAY FROM THE TREATED PLANTS UNTIL THE APPLICATIONS LISTED BELOW ARE DRY.*

Tree Pruning

Green Giant offers tree pruning with two basic goals in mind…

  1. Improve the structure of developing trees. Trees that receive the appropriate pruning measures while they are young will develop a desirable branch structure as they grow and mature. Pruning should accentuate the natural branching habit of the tree and correct structural problems.
  2. Restoration pruning is necessary when trees have either outgrown the location where they are planted (they are just too big) or the branching patterns have deteriorated and the tree has lost its aesthetic character.

Pruning is advisable if:

  • Lower branches interfere with people or vehicles, or block visibility
  • Branches are growing into buildings or utility wires
  • Limbs have been broken or severely damaged
  • Branches are dead, dying, decayed or hazardous
  • Trees have crossing branches, weak branch unions, or other defects
  • Trees have grown too large and might injure people or damage property

Landscape trees not only make homes and communities more beautiful, but they also improve our environment and can increase the value of a property up to 20%. Trees are truly assets that need to be enhanced and protected. Proper pruning is definitely a worthwhile investment.

Proper pruning is complicated and should be done only by qualified arborists. A full time Certified Arborist will oversee all pruning work performed by Green Giant.

Timing: Green Giant provides Free Pruning Estimates at any time of year and performs the work in the winter months, when the trees are dormant. Sign up for your pruning work as early as possible to get on our schedule.

Repairing Drought Damage

Green Giant Lawn Care provides:

CONTROLLED RELEASE FERTILIZER

  • Our summer fertilizer contains slow release material suitable for summer use. This material will break down slowly based on rainfall and temperature.

INSECT CONTROL

  • We apply material (Application 3 – Summer) to control such turf damaging insects as chinch bug and sod webworm which thrive in hot, dry weather.

MICRONUTRIENTS

  • Slow growing turf (typical in summer months) will benefit from applications of iron to enhance  green color. We include iron in our Summer application.

What you can do to help:

MOWING:

  • Mow your lawn at 3-4″. Remove only 1/3 of the grass blade with each mowing.  Avoid mowing when the lawn is under stress.  If there is not enough growth to justify mowing, DO NOT MOW!

WATERING:

  • Be careful when watering flowers, shrubs and beds.  Saturating turf around these areas, if watering in the evening, will promote lawn disease.
  • Without water your lawn may become dormant.  For the types of grasses in our area, this is normal and actually a healthy response to stress.  Should you choose to water, please follow these guidelines:
    • Avoid watering in the evening
    • Watering an area one to two times per week for 45 to 60 minutes is recommended for the entire season.

Horticultural Oil Application

What you can expect:

Horticultural Oils are an ecologically friendly way to handle many plant pests. The oil is highly refined to remove impurities that could damage plants. The oils work by smothering the insects & their eggs.

This treatment helps to control over-wintering pests that may be present on the plants. Horticultural oils are also known to suppress some plant diseases. Follow up treatments for additional insect and/or disease control, throughout the season may be needed.

What you can do to benefit most from today’s visit:

The product typically dries within 1-2 hours and any precipitation after this time will not adversely affect the treatment.

  • Soil Injection (See Additional Services)
  • Soil Root Fertilization (See Additional Services)
  • Weed Control in Beds (See Additional Services)

Early Spring Insect and/or Disease Control

Why this application is important:

During early spring your trees and/or shrubs are susceptible to many insects and diseases. Early preventative treatment will help maintain your tree and/or shrubs health.

What you can expect:

This application should dry within 1-2 hours and any precipitation after this time will not adversely impact the effectiveness of the treatment.

What you can do to benefit most from today’s visit:

  • Soil Injection (See Additional Services)
  • Soil Root Fertilization (See Additional Services)
  • Weed Control in Beds (See Additional Services)

Early Summer Insect and/or Disease Control

Why this application is important:

Today we applied insecticide to the trees and shrubs to help prevent summer insect and/or disease damage. In addition, fungicides were included if they are part of your service program.

What you can expect:

This application should dry within 1-2 hours and any precipitation after this time will not adversely impact the effectiveness of the treatment.

What you can do to benefit most from today’s visit:

  • Prune properly to allow good air circulation and install plants in their proper environment.
  • Weed Control in Beds (See Additional Services)

Late Spring Insect & Disease

Why this application is important:

Today we applied insecticide to the trees and shrubs to help prevent seasonal insect and/or disease damage. In addition, fungicides were included if they are part of your service program.

What you can expect:

This application should dry within 1-2 hours and any precipitation after this time will not adversely impact the effectiveness of the treatment.Late Spring

What you can do to benefit most from today’s visit:

  • Proper pruning to allow good air circulation
  • Good sanitation practices of removing fallen leaves or twigs on which diseases can over-winter
  • Installing plants in their proper environment and not subjecting them to potential problems
  • Soil Injection (See Additional Services)
  • Weed Control in Beds (See Additional Services)

There will always be some feeding on foliage by some pests. Our treatments are designed to decrease pest populations so there is little noticeable damage to your plantings. Check with us about our pruning services, which we offer during the dormant season.

Spring Deep Root Fertilization

What was done:

A complete fertilizer was injected approximately 6 inches below the surface into the area surrounding the root zone. The fertilizer applied contains 55% Controlled Release Nitrogen with Phosphorus, Potassium, and essential micronutrients such as Iron.

Why this is important:

To help the nutrients get to the target plant instead of nearby turf roots. Fertilization allows plants to maintain vigor and vitality. Healthy plants are able to better withstand disease and insect activity as well as weather conditions.

What you can do to benefit most from today’s visit:

  • Rain and soil moisture will help increase the rate of root absorption.
  • Soil Injection (See Additional Services)
  • Inoculation of Mycorrhizae (See Additional Services)
  • Weed Control in Beds (See Additional Services)

Spring Root Fertilization is a great way to get your trees and shrubs off to a good start this spring and help them recover from winter. If this is not part of your program or you haven’t had your plants fertilized recently, call us to schedule an application.

Landscape trees and shrubs are merely forest plants growing in urban environments. The urban setting has more stress and less available water, nutrients, and organic matter than the forest. Recent bio-technical advances allow us to recreate the “natural forest soil ecosystem for our residential and commercial plantings. This involves inoculating trees and shrubs with a beneficial fungus called mycorrhizae. Mycorrhizal fungi attach to the roots to provide the following plant benefits:

  • Improved root and plant growth
  • Increased water and nutrient uptake
  • Better transplant survival rates
  • Protection against soil-borne diseases
  • Added drought stress tolerance
