How did all of the rain affect lawns in 2018?

The information in the box below comes from a study run by Dr. Mike Fidanza at Penn State, Berks Campus. Dr. Fidanza conducts scientific studies on turfgrass and, in one of his reports, he included the information below. The commentary explains the effect of the heavy and frequent rains had on lawns in 2018.

In addition to what Dr. Fidanza stated above, we also found that mowing became a problem for many customers. For both customers that mow their own lawn and customers that hire a company to mow, it was often hard or impossible to mow with the right frequency.

If it is raining when you have time to mow (or your mowing company is scheduled to arrive), the lawn probably didn’t get mowed. (I know mine didn’t…several times). When the grass gets too long and then it gets cut, it is a shock to the grass. This is damaging to the roots and makes the lawn more susceptible to damaging insects and turfgrass diseases. Also, when the grass is long and wet, it clumps up. These clumps tend to smother the grass.
