Lime application – why isn’t my lawn white?
We perform hundreds of lime applications on lawns each year and, surprisingly, the most common question we get about lime is, “I don’t see any lime on my lawn – did your guy even do the application?” This question is asked at least twice as often as the 2nd most asked question related to lime applications – which is, “What Does Lime Do for My Lawn?”
Anyway, many people have seen lime being spread on a farmer’s field, and yes it is a white powder, often blowing in the air around the tractor. The lime farmers use is called pulverized lime (agricultural limestone or garden lime). The pulverized lime is used for the same reason we use lime on lawns. The difference is, farmers are working on very large fields where the blowing powder is not a problem.
Pulverized lime is just too messy to be used on most lawns at commercial and residential properties.
For home and commercial properties, Pelletized Lime, or Pelletized Limestone, is the best option. Pelletized lime is simply the white, pulverized lime that farmers use but pressed into small pellets to make it more spreadable and less dusty/messy.
During the process of binding the powder into pellets, the material turns brown – making it hard to see the lime on a lawn. If you look closely, you will see the lime – especially in bare or thin areas of the lawn.
Why does the limestone need to be crushed into powder?
By crushing the stone into powder, the material will dissolve quickly and work faster than if something larger, like chips of stone, were used.
These pellets are also water soluble and dissolve quicker when they get wet. This allows the lime to easily get into the soil.
